VANCOUVER, July 22, 2014 /CNW/ - The Jack Webster Foundation today announced that Global BC reporter Brian Coxford, will receive the 2014 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award at the 28th Annual Jack Webster Awards Dinner on October 29, 2014.
The dinner, featuring National Post columnist and CBC commentator Andrew Coyne, will also honour the past year's best journalists with coveted Webster statues in 13 news categories.
The Jack Webster Foundation was established in 1986 to recognize excellence in British Columbia journalism in honour of the legendary BC reporter, Jack Webster. The Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award, the foundation's premier honour, is named after the illustrious Vancouver Sun journalist who started out at the Victoria Times in 1917 and went on to become the confidant of prime ministers.
"I am so humbled to be chosen by the Jack Webster Foundation to receive this award. For me it is coming full circle. I was Jack's reporter during the first years he came to television and BCTV. Jack always proudly referred to himself as a reporter. He brought honour, trust and respect to the profession and I am lucky to have experienced his influence."
In announcing this year's Hutchison Award winner, Jack Webster Foundation Co-Chairs Don Babick and Scott Macrae noted that Coxford's journalism career spans over 45 years, nearly four decades of which have been at Global BC and its predecessor BCTV.
"Brian Coxford's coverage of issues and breaking events from every corner of British Columbia has produced a body of work that epitomizes the highest standards of broadcast journalism," Babick said. "Brian's work has shed light such critical areas as inner-city schools, health care and forest management policies that have helped shape public dialogue around issues impacting the lives of all British Columbians," Macrae added.
Previous winners of the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award include: David Baines, Patricia Graham, Mel Rothenburger, Jim Taylor, Bill Good, Steve Wyatt, Jim Harrison, Vaughn Palmer, Vicki Gabereau, Tony Parsons, Rafe Mair, Allan Fotheringham, Patrick Nagle, Roy Peterson, Cameron Bell, Keith Bradbury, Dan McLeod, Denny Boyd, George Garrett, Moira Farrow, Jim Hume, Warren Barker, Len Norris, and Hutchison himself.
