TORONTO, April 20, 2015 /CNW/ - Norton Rose Fulbright congratulates its senior partner, the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, on being honoured with the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in South Africa, in the Gold category. The Order will be bestowed by South African President Jacob Zuma in an investiture ceremony in Pretoria on Freedom Day, April 27, 2015.
The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo—a National Order—recognises eminent foreign nationals for friendship shown to South Africa. It is therefore an Order of peace, cooperation and active expression of solidarity and support.
National Orders are the highest awards that South Africa bestows on its citizens and eminent foreign nationals who have contributed towards the advancement of democracy and who have made a significant impact on improving the lives of South Africans. The National Orders also recognise the contributions made by individuals who contributed to a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa as envisaged in the country's Constitution.
Norman Steinberg, global vice chair of Norton Rose Fulbright and chairman of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada said:
"We extend our sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Mulroney on this tremendous honour. It is a fitting tribute for the leading role his government played in the campaign against apartheid in South Africa. It is also another wonderful example of the lasting impact of his leadership in Canada and on a global scale. We are very proud of Brian Mulroney and very happy for him, this is a truly deserving recognition."
The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa states that Mr. Mulroney will be awarded his National Order, "For his exceptional contribution to the liberation movement of South Africa. His steadfast support for the release of Nelson Mandela and for imposing sanctions on South Africa's apartheid regime led to a free, democratic, non-sexist and non-racial South Africa."
2015 marks the 21st Investiture ceremony since the inception of the new National Orders system in South Africa, contributing towards unity, reconciliation and building the nation. Previous recipients of the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in Gold include:
