Bruce Power releases briefing document for 42nd Parliament of Ontario
TIVERTON, ON, June 8, 2018 /CNW/ - This morning, following yesterday's Ontario General Election, Bruce Power has released a briefing document for Ontario's 42nd Parliament, which will be sworn into office in the coming weeks.
The document builds on the policy positions the company has taken related to its role in Ontario's supply mix and outlines the key role the site plays as a low-cost, reliable supplier of electricity. It also re-enforces the role Bruce Power plays as Canada's largest public-private partnership securing jobs, delivering innovation and private sector investment.
"The 42nd Parliament of Ontario will see many new faces both in terms of elected officials and the staff that will play a critical role in supporting them," said James Scongack, Bruce Power's Vice President, Corporate Affairs & Environment. "We will continue to be proactive in discussing the role we play as a low-cost generator and the facts about our operation to all Members of Provincial Parliament.
"We power more for less. We provide 30 per cent of Ontario's electricity at far less than the average price to generate power. The 22,000 direct and indirect jobs from our operation invigorate communities and businesses throughout Ontario."
The briefing document is available for download here.
Bruce Power's role as a low-cost generator has been recognized by a range of independent experts, business groups and energy experts. In 2017, Ontario's Financial Accountability Office (FAO) released a report on the life extension of the province's nuclear fleet. The report concluded, "There is currently no portfolio of alternative low emissions generation which could replace nuclear generation at a comparable cost."
The report also recognized that, "As Bruce Power is a private sector entity, any transfer of risk to Bruce Power reduces the exposure of ratepayers."
Bruce Power's Life-Extension Program commenced on Jan. 1, 2016, and is on time and on budget. All funding requirements for this project are being met by the private sector.
