Budweiser Names Iconic Clydesdale in Honour of Calgary Stampede's 100th Anniversary
CALGARY, July 10, 2012 /CNW/ - As a proud partner of the Calgary Stampede, Budweiser - Canada's number one beer - will celebrate the Stampede's momentous centennial by designating one of its Clydesdale colts in honour of the Calgary Stampede. The colt, named Century to mark the occasion, will travel around North America once he is fully grown to fulfil his duties as a Budweiser Clydesdale.
"The Calgary Stampede's 100th anniversary is a huge event for Calgary and Alberta, and Budweiser is honoured to be a part of it. As a long-standing partner, Budweiser wanted to commemorate the Stampede's centennial in a way that paid tribute to its roots," said Jeff Ryan, Director of Corporate Affairs, Labatt Breweries of Canada. "Our partnership with the Stampede spans decades and is a reflection of our commitment to Alberta. The naming of the Clydesdale Century is a commemoration of our long and proud history of brewing beer in Alberta."
Century was born May 21, 2012 and weighed approximately 150 lbs. His sire is Perfection and his mother is Ashley. He is expected to join the Clydesdale hitch once he reaches maturity in 2016.
The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales have been a symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933. Canadians of Scottish decent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800's. Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.
In addition to the naming of the Budweiser Clydesdale, Budweiser is also toasting the Stampede's centennial with limited-edition cans. The cans - featuring the Stampede's insignia - are now available at participating retailers and bars and restaurants.
Budweiser and Alberta
Budweiser has been brewed in Alberta since 1980. A team of more than 200 Albertans work year round to produce approximately 300 million bottles of Budweiser each year. This year marks another milestone for the Labatt Alberta Brewery, with the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking on the brewery site in Edmonton.
"Along with the Stampede's 100th anniversary, we're proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking of Labatt's Alberta brewery in Edmonton," said Ryan. "It's an exciting milestone that speaks to our enduring brewing history in the province. We look forward to continuing brewing great tasting, quality beer in Alberta for many more years to come."
