Businesses and families in Newfoundland and Labrador to benefit from public infrastructure improvements

NORRIS POINT, NL, Aug. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada, and Newfoundland and Labrador are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern recreational facilities, and reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect provincial waterways and preserve local ecosystems.

Today, Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; and Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador announced almost $13 million in joint funding for 20 public infrastructure projects on the western side of the island portion of the province. 

The Government of Canada is contributing $4.3 million to these projects and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $6.9 million. The municipalities involved are providing the balance of the funding.

Thanks to this support, families and businesses in communities such as Burgeo, Kippens and Norris Point will benefit from clean and reliable water, effective wastewater treatment and a healthier environment.

The people of Channel-Port aux Basques will have access to an improved recreational facility that will support a safe and supportive community space.

This funding helps us provide a better quality of service to our residents, businesses, hospital and the expanding tourism industry. • Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
• $26.9 billion of this funding will support green infrastructure projects, including $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank. These investments complement the Atlantic Growth Strategy, a 2-year federal-provincial action plan aimed at stimulating economic growth in the region through five priority areas:
• Skilled workforce/Immigration;
• Innovation;
• Clean growth and climate change;
• Trade and investment;
• Infrastructure.

Joint federal-provincial-municipal funding through the Small Communities Fund will support infrastructure projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Government of Canada is contributing $4,258,357 to these projects and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $6,920,631. The municipalities involved are providing the balance of the funding.
