In the news release, Goldcorp Inc. captures top honour at CPA Canada's Awards of Excellence in Corporate Reporting, issued 09-Dec-2015 by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), please note that an error occurred in the 7th paragraph which should read "In total, 21 awards were presented to winners from both the corporate and public sectors tonight at a gala event in Toronto, Ontario" instead of "In total, 21 awards were presented to winners from both the corporate and public sectors last night at a gala event in Toronto, Ontario.". The complete, corrected release follows:
TORONTO, Dec. 9, 2015 /CNW/ - Goldcorp Inc. emerged as a new titan at the Awards of Excellence in Corporate Reporting, presented annually by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada).
In presenting the awards each year, CPA Canada recognizes the important role high quality reporting plays within the Canadian economy and in the stability of the country's financial system. The information contained in corporate reports can drive key investment and business decisions.
Goldcorp was recognized three times, including winning the 2015 Overall Award of Excellence in Corporate Reporting – the program's most prestigious honour. This accomplishment is particularly notable since the top award had shifted between two powerhouses, TELUS and PotashCorp, for more than ten years.
"Adding Goldcorp to the list of top corporate reporters in Canada demonstrates what can be achieved with a commitment to excellence," said Kevin Dancey, president and CEO, CPA Canada. "Goldcorp performed well in all judging categories but was particularly strong with its sustainability reporting. The company integrated relevant aspects of environmental, economic, social and governance information with its financial reporting resulting in a thorough picture of how it creates long-term value."
It is not surprising then that Goldcorp received the Award of Excellence in Sustainability Reporting. The company also was the industry winner in the Mining category.
"At Goldcorp, we believe that strong and transparent social, environmental and economic performance and disclosures are fundamental to sustainable business practices," said Brent Bergeron, the company's executive vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability. "To see this work recognized amongst such a prestigious group of companies is truly gratifying."
In total, 21 awards were presented to winners from both the corporate and public sectors tonight at a gala event in Toronto, Ontario.
Three other companies received multiple honours. Agrium won Awards of Excellence in Financial Reporting and Electronic Disclosure. TELUS was recognized for excellence in Corporate Governance and was the industry winner in Communications and Media. Bombardier Inc. was the industry winner in Industrial Products and Services and received an Honourable Mention in Sustainability Reporting.
CPA Canada's ultimate objective with the awards program is to raise the bar when it comes to corporate reporting practices in Canada. Each program participant receives a confidential assessment of its reporting materials to help the organization improve year over year.
"Congratulations to Goldcorp and all those who entered this year's competition," said Dancey. "Not only does participating show a commitment to continuous improvement but it also supports the notion that excellence feeds excellence."
During the gala, CPA Canada also thanked the sponsors of the awards program for their important support of reporting excellence:
