Call for applications: CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships
TORONTO, Jan. 22, 2019 /CNW/ - To raise the profile of Indigenous voices and issues in the media, The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF), together with CBC News, is now accepting applications to its CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships program.
The annual fellowships provide a unique opportunity for two early-career Indigenous journalists, with one-to-10 years' experience, to explore Indigenous issues while being hosted for one month at the CBC's Indigenous Unit in Winnipeg. The application deadline is Feb. 22, 2019.
"If mainstream media are to make good on the call from Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to 'ensure that the colonial press truly becomes a thing of the past,' we need to expand on the critical work started by the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowship, which has an impressive record of fostering better understanding of Indigenous issues in the media and acting as a springboard for early-career Indigenous journalists into steady employment," says Duncan McCue, host of the CBC Radio's Cross Country Checkup and co-chair of the jury.
Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend, while the CJF covers all associated travel and accommodation costs, a per diem for meals and other reasonable expenses.
Last year's recipients were Ntawnis Piapot and Jasmine Kabatay. For her fellowship, Piapot, a Nehiyaw Iskwew from the Piapot Cree Nation in southern Saskatchewan, explored varying levels of commitment by universities to Indigenization. Read about her experience here. Piapot has joined CBC Saskatoon as a reporter.
Kabatay, an Anishinaabe journalist from Seine River First Nation in northwestern Ontario, explored the challenges and confusion faced by those using Indian status cards. Read about her experience here. Kabatay splits her time between CBC Hamilton and CBC Kitchener-Waterloo as part of an internship.
This year's recipients will be recognized at the CJF Awards at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on June 13, 2019. Early-bird rates for tickets and tables for this gala event are available until Feb. 28, 2019.
Thank you to RBC Foundation and CN, along with individual donors Rosemary Speirs, a CJF honorary director, and Isabel Bassett, former chair and CEO of TVO, for their generous support of this award.
