TORONTO, Nov. 16, 2017 /CNW/ - The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)'s Enterprise Project Management Office has won top prize at an international symposium.
The Project Management Institute, the world's leading association for the project, program and portfolio management profession, has named CAMH's Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) as PMO of the year for 2017. The PMO of the Year Award honors a PMO that has added superior value to its organization through its support of successful strategic initiatives. The award recognizes a PMO that has had a positive and clear impact on business results.
"At CAMH, our Project Management Office serves a truly enterprise role, enabling all areas of the hospital to achieve on CAMH's strategic vision. In fact, the PMO has become the engine of the hospital, in the process turning CAMH into a project-driven organization which can deliver on most complex initiatives," said Damian Jankowicz, CAMH's Vice-President, Information Management.
"The evolution of the PMO over the last few years has been tremendous – from a small shop focused solely on IT projects to a PMO which energizes the organization and helps the hospital achieve its clinical and strategic aims," said Tracey MacArthur, Senior Vice-President and Chief Clinical Officer.
After launching in 2012 with a focus on IT-related projects, CAMH's EPMO expanded its role to support projects across the entire organization, from clinical practices to research operations. The EPMO supported the implementation of a major clinical information system through to the achievement of HIMSS Stage 7, which gives staff across the organization access to up-to-date patient records and improves the quality and safety of patient care. Ninety per cent of suicide risk assessments are now completed within 24 hours (up from 75 per cent), which has dramatically increased the percentage of at-risk patients identified, leading to care planning being adjusted to address patient risk.
"We were extremely excited to win. We were up against some very big competition, but what we found was our approach was very different. It is truly enterprise – which is rare. I think we made a strong case around what we've helped our hospital achieve as a whole," said Carrie Fletcher, CAMH's Senior Director of Health Information Management and Enterprise Project Management Office.
