VANCOUVER, March 4, 2019 /CNW/ - International Women's Day, coming up on Friday, March 8th, is all about challenging stereotypes. Shirley Weir, founder of Menopause Chicks, is launching a campaign called "Unlearn Menopause," to eradicate any outdated misconceptions about menopause that keep women from getting informed about their health.
Weir is on a mission to empower women to navigate perimenopause and menopause with confidence and ease. She hosts a private social learning community on facebook where she facilitates thousands of conversations each month. She wants all women to have trustworthy information, to ask for help, to know they are not alone, and to understand there are solutions available.
"The first step is not for women to learn about perimenopause and menopause," Weir explains. "The first step is for women to UNLEARN any outdated stereotypes and extreme depictions we've been seeing in media for decades."
A quick google search tells us menopause must mean a woman is hot, depressed, gaining weight, no longer interested in sex, and "peezes" (pees when she sneezes.) Weir says it's simply untrue to assume these are foregone conclusions for women, and worse, that women might accept these experiences as things they need to put up with.
"I'm not saying some women are not challenged through perimenopause and beyond. Many are, and we can learn to navigate these challenges by getting informed and building a strong health team," states Weir. "But if we don't address all the stigma and negativity, women will continue to avoid getting informed."
In the lead up to International Women's Day 2019, Weir is sharing a video series on facebook intended to ignite a fresh point-of-view on menopause and she is inviting women to shift their thinking in order to prioritize their own midlife health. During the series, some of the myths Weir will challenge include:
- Hormones are bad
- Menopause means hot, old, tired, moody, and fat
- Light bladder leakage is just part of being a woman
- There's no sex after menopause
- Menopause requires medical attention
The Unlearn Menopause campaign runs from March 4-8 on Facebook.com/MenopauseChicks. Monday's video is called "Hormones is not a swear word."
