Canada and India sign Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation in road transportation Français
OTTAWA, June 11, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, along with Dr. the Honourable C.P. Joshi, Minister for Roads and Highways, India, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance cooperation in road transportation and create new opportunities for Canadian businesses.
"The MOU between Canada and India recognizes our common goals of promoting safe, efficient, cost-effective and integrated road transportation systems," said Minister Lebel. "It represents an important step towards deeper bilateral relations and demonstrates our government's continued commitment to build stronger ties with an important trading partner and key international market."
The purpose of this MOU is to establish a long-term partnership that provides for the exchange of information on road safety and highway management, as well as intelligent transport systems. It also aims to facilitate partnerships between key private and public sector stakeholders and raise awareness of infrastructure investment opportunities in Canada and India.
"I am pleased that this MOU will serve to identify new opportunities in a growing market for Canadian companies in the transportation sector - part of our government's plan to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for Canadians," said Minister Lebel.
The two ministers signed the MOU at the 15th Annual Conference and General Meeting of ITS Canada, held in Quebec City this week. This event provides an opportunity to discuss developments and deployments in the field of intelligent transportation technology.
