QUÉBEC, May 16, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Quebec recognize that investing in public transit infrastructure is crucial to economic growth, reducing air pollution, and creating inclusive communities where everyone has access to public services and job opportunities.
The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and Member of Parliament for Québec City; Joël Lightbound, Member of Parliament for Louis-Hébert and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance; André Fortin, Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transport Electrification; and Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister Responsible for the Capitale-Nationale Region, today announced an investment of nearly $60.9 million for 24 projects being carried out by the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. The Government of Canada will provide more than $33.8 million for these projects and the Government of Quebec will contribute over $27 million. The RTC will provide the remaining funding.
Among the projects receiving funding are the purchase of midi-buses to improve traffic flow in the city centre, the rehabilitation of the Lebourgneuf operations centre roof, as well as work to refurbish the maintenance workshop. The RTC will also build a new terminal (Terminus de la Faune) and a Park-o-Bus at the Québec City Airport to better serve its customers.
Once completed, this work will improve the performance, efficiency and reliability of Québec City's transit system, make it more inclusive and allow the RTC to meet the community's immediate needs while preparing for anticipated future increases in ridership.
