TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QC, May 7, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Quebec recognize that investing in public transit infrastructure is crucial to economic growth, reducing air pollution, and creating inclusive communities where everyone has access to public services and job opportunities.
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade and Member of Parliament for Saint-Maurice‒Champlain; and Jean-Denis Girard, Member of the National Assembly for Trois-Rivières, today announced an investment of nearly $10.4 million for 19 projects being carried out by the Société de transport de Trois-Rivières (STTR), under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. The Government of Canada will provide close to $5.8 million for these projects, and the Government of Quebec will contribute more than $4.6 million. The STTR will provide the remaining funding.
Among the projects made possible by this funding are the purchase of hybrid and urban buses, midibuses to facilitate traffic in the downtown area, and paratransit minibuses to renew the vehicle fleet. The STTR will also be able to equip several drop-off areas with bus shelters to serve the cégep, Trois-Rivières hospital, collège Laflèche and the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières.
Once completed, this work will improve the performance, efficiency and reliability of Trois-Rivières' transit system, make it more inclusive and allow the STTR to meet the community's immediate needs while preparing for anticipated future increases in ridership.
