Bakery Volume to Remain in Western Canada
TORONTO, July 14, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada Bread Company, Limited announced today plans to close its bakery in Calgary, Alberta on September 8, 2017. Products made at the Calgary bakery can be baked at other bakeries in Western Canada where there is available capacity.
"Canada Bread is committed to building a sustainable company to meet our long term business objectives. Since 2014, the company has invested more than $380 M, but that also means we need to make difficult decisions," said Jennifer Park, Vice President, Operations, Canada Bread. "While we have made every effort to sustain and build the business, during the last three years our bakery in Calgary has been losing volume. As a result, we have made the decision to close the bakery. While this is the business reality, it is hard to make the necessary changes. We will do everything possible to ease the impact on our people."
The bread baked in the Calgary bakery will continue to be baked in Western Canada. Jobs and production will not be moved to other parts of Canada or other countries.
The facility in Calgary employs approximately 63 associates and bakes pantry bread. Affected associates will receive severance packages, as well as personal counselling and ongoing outplacement services and workshops. They will also be encouraged to seek employment at other Canada Bread facilities.
