Canada Goes Undefeated on Day Two Women's Continental Championships
CORNWALL, On, April 6, 2012 /CNW/ - Canada's Women's National Boxing Team won all four of their bouts on day two of competition at the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) 2012 Women's Continental Championships in Cornwall, Ontario.
Mandy Bujold, 51 kg, the reigning Pan American Champion, defeated Zaida Enriquez of Mexico 24-4.
"It was a very good warm up for tomorrow. I tried to leave a good impression at the end," said the victorious Bujold
The Canadian will face a strong test tomorrow against Marlen Esparza from the USA. She prevailed against Argentinean Paola Benavidez. Esparza and Bujold are the favorites in the 51 kg division.
Canadian Melissa Guillemette defeated Jenny Benedict from Barbados 26-10. Guillemette is new to international competition. Guillemette will face Leonela Sanchez from Argentina in the semifinals who also won tonight.
In 60 kg class Canada's Sandra Bizier faced a tough opponent in Queen Underwood from the USA. In the bout of the night Bizier stood her ground winning 24-17.
In other action, Myriam da Silva from Canada defeated Raquel Miller from USA 19-18. Argentinian sisters Leonela Sanchez, 57 kg, and Dayana Sanchez, 60 kg, both won. Pan American Champion at 60 kg, Kiria Tapia of Puerto Rico also prevailed.
"I'm delighted with the performance of our boxers, they showed a tremendous amount of skill and heart," said the President of Boxing Canada, Pat Fiacco.
