CALGARY, June 26, 2013 /CNW/ - Today Canada Safeway opened a complimentary refreshment centre at the Mission Safeway located at 524 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, Alberta, to provide water, fresh fruit and snacks for the hundreds of volunteers that are lending a hand to help clean up the community. The refreshment centre has also been equipped with portable toilets and hand wash stations as an additional service for the volunteers who have spent countless hours helping residents to get back into their homes.
"Safeway has been a proud member of the Mission community since 1971, and as we watched the damage continue to escalate, our employees immediately wanted to help. The Mission Safeway store will reopen as soon as power is restored, and in the meantime we are doing what we can to support our neighbours as they begin to rebuild their homes and businesses," said Chuck Mulvenna, President and Chief Operating Officer for Canada Safeway.
In addition to raising over $70,000 for the Canadian Red Cross, Canada Safeway has provided thousands of sandwiches, fresh fruit, water and refreshments to front line emergency workers in Calgary over the past week. Communities such as Cochrane, Bragg Creek, Medicine Hat, Canmore and First Nation reserves have also received emergency water and supplies from Canada Safeway.
As the largest single contributor to the Calgary Food Bank, we're also ensuring those most vulnerable are supported during these challenging times, and have partnered with Red Cross as it prepares for the establishment of its community based flood clean-up centers. Canada Safeway has a long standing history of assisting communities in times of disaster relief including the Edmonton Tornado, Manitoba Floods, Slave Lake Fires and other local emergencies.
