Canada's Grasslands are the Focus of the Newest HWW PSA
PSA profiles one of Canada's most endangered habitats
OTTAWA, Sept. 1 /CNW/ - Canada's grasslands are the latest subject of the popular Hinterland Who's Who (HWW) public service announcements, released today by the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) and Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS).
"Less than one quarter of Canada's original grassland habitat still exists today," said Wade Luzny, CEO, Executive Vice-President at CWF. "There is an urgent need to conserve what's left for the sake of the many At-Risk and Endangered species that call the Grasslands home. The crucial first step of effective conservation is cultivating knowledge about this complex place, and the newest Hinterland Who's Who video is an integral part of that effort."
Using unforgettable footage shot at Saskatchewan's Grasslands National Park, the PSA illustrates the incredible biodiversity of Canada's grasslands, which include species that can't be found in any other type of habitat in the world. It also explains that grasslands are among Canada's most endangered natural habitats, and profiles some of the heroic efforts made by conservation groups, researchers, and citizens to restore this ecosystem. A downloadable grasslands fact sheet is also available at www.hww.ca. It complements the PSA by providing detailed descriptions of what defines a grassland, where they're found in Canada and around the world, what species live there, and exactly what types of threats continue to challenge those species. The fact sheet also suggests practical ways that individuals can contribute to restoration efforts in their own backyard.
