WINNIPEG, Sept. 8, 2014 /CNW/ - Canada's History Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Janet Walker as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 15, 2014. Ms. Walker will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of the organization, as well as communications, government, and donor relations strategies.
Ms. Walker is a long-time resident of Winnipeg. She has had a successful consulting practice, helping Winnipeg's not-for-profit sector in the areas of strategic planning, revenue development, group facilitation, capacity building and communications support. She was executive consultant to the University of Winnipeg Foundation, playing a key role in the recent capital campaign that raised more than $70 million.
"The board of directors at Canada's History Society is confident that under Ms. Walker's leadership, the organization will grow in its ability to promote the discovery and understanding of our nation's history," said board of directors chair Richard Pound. "Her strengths in the areas of strategy and fundraising will deliver clear goals and emphasize fund development for the long term."

The Society publishes two magazines. Canada's History has a paid circulation of 32,000 and an unprecedented PMB-measured reach of 965,000 readers or 25 readers per copy. Kayak: Canada's History Magazine for Kids, has a paid circulation of 8,000 in English and extended controlled distribution to over 32,000 French subscribers through a partnership with Quebec-based Les Débrouillards magazine. The society also publishes CanadasHistory.ca attracting more than 290,000 unique visitors per year; administers the Governor General's History Awards; coordinates student-based initiatives known as Heritage Fairs and Young Citizens, and recently launched a series of branded travel tours to European battlefields to commemorate significant anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars.
