Canada's Minister of Status of Women Encourages Young Women and Girls to See No Limits in Career Choices

OTTAWA, Oct. 31, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, today wrapped up celebrations for Women's History Month 2013 by recognizing the importance of women's leadership and participation in a wide range of sectors in the Canadian economy.

"Women's History Month 2013 has provided a tremendous opportunity to recognize and salute women pioneers in diverse fields across Canada," said Minister Leitch. "Through their stories, I hope young women across the country are inspired to see unlimited paths they can follow to success."

The theme for Women's History Month 2013 has been Canadian Women Pioneers: Inspiring Change Through Ongoing Leadership. Throughout October, the Harper Government  has highlighted Canadian women as pioneers in many fields of endeavour.

"The number one priority of our government is jobs, growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Leitch. "I want to encourage young women to consider career opportunities in every field - in the sciences, business, technology and skilled trades, as well in the natural resources sector."

During Women's History Month 2013, Canada commemorated the "Persons Case" which, on October 18, 1929, first legally recognized women as "persons" under Canadian law. To honour this milestone the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case are presented annually. This year they were presented on October 29, 2013 to five accomplished Canadian women who have made outstanding contributions to the quality of life for women in Canada. In addition, during this month Canada celebrated the second annual International Day of the Girl.

"It was an honour for me to participate in the various events and milestones recognizing amazing women and their accomplishments," added Minister Leitch. "I look forward to continuing to promote the full participation of girls and women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada."

The Harper Government is committed to expanding opportunities for women to participate in all sectors of the economy. Since 2007, more than $46 million has been approved through the Women's Program for projects that promote women's economic security and prosperity. This commitment includes supporting numerous, community-based projects across the country that provide support, training and mentorship for women entering the workforce. In fact, since 2007, more than $7.7 million has been approved for projects that support women in non-traditional occupations.
