HALIFAX, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - Infection control experts from across the country will meet in Halifax from May 25-28 at the World Trade and Convention Centre for educational workshops and conference.
Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC Canada) brings together Infection Prevention and Control Professionals (ICPs), Medical Microbiologists, Epidemiologists, and Infectious Disease specialists from all provinces and territories, as well as international guests, involved in the prevention of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). It is estimated that over 200 000 patients a year develop infections as a result of their treatment and that over 12 000 will die as a result. Healthcare-acquired infections cost the Canadian healthcare system over 1 billion dollars annually.
Antibiotic resistant organism numbers are on the increase worldwide, and these problem organisms are being carried from country to country, along with new or emerging viruses. Spread within healthcare facilities can occur through poor Infection Prevention and Control activities that may include outdated cleaning protocols and inadequate hand hygiene. This conference will address these concerns with workshops focusing on Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization (full day session), Infection Prevention and Control in the Dental Office, Policy and Procedure Development, and Community Health Care (all half day sessions). Specialized sessions will be held for Long Term Care and Pre-Hospital Care Specialties. Focused lectures include sessions on some of these antibiotic resistant organisms, and hand hygiene. Our first-rate speakers are attending from across Canada and speakers will also attend from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the United States.
