Canada's Premier Infection Prevention and Control Conference

WINNIPEG, June 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Infection control experts from across the country will meet in Saskatoon from June 16 - June 21, 2012 at TCU Place for an educational workshop and conference.
The Community and Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA-Canada) brings together Infection Prevention and Control Professionals (ICPs), Medical Microbiologists, Epidemiologists, and Infectious Disease specialists from all provinces and territories of Canada, as well as international guests, involved in the prevention of healthcare-acquired infections. It is estimated that over 200 000 patients a year develop infections as a result of their treatment and that over 12 000 will die as a result. Healthcare-acquired infections cost the Canadian healthcare system over 1 billion dollars annually.
Specialized sessions will focus on the education requirements of the Novice ICP, the Advanced ICP, and the Infection Prevention and Control Professionals who have specialized expertise and interest in diverse setting. Julie Storr of the World Health Organization Patient Safety (UK), and Hugh Macleod, Chair of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, are among the eminent experts who will be presenting. An all-day workshop will review current trends and observations about cleaning, disinfection and sterilization in healthcare institutions. During the conference (Tuesday-Thursday), plenary sessions will highlight issues around antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic awareness and stewardship.
