ACSESS Supports Steps to Keep Ontario Open for Business with Evidence-Based Legislation
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 4, 2018 /CNW/ - The Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services (ACSESS) applauds Premier Ford's statement to repeal in its entirety Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017, which hurt workers and the economy. It urges the provincial government to honour this commitment to repeal the entire Bill and replace it with legislation that protects front-line workers and keeps Ontario competitive in the global market.
As part of an industry that annually generates more than $7.8 billion operating revenue in Ontario, ACSESS members ask the government to apply an evidence-based approach to inform new legislation. Members report that since it became law, Bill 148 and its dramatic minimum wage increase have forced businesses to make drastic budget, investment and human resource decisions.
"Since June 2018, we have urged the government to repeal Bill 148 and worked effectively with the Honourable Laurie Scott, Minister of Labour, to help bring balance back to workplaces in Ontario," says Mary McIninch, Executive Director and Director, Government Relations, ACSESS. "We now implore the Ontario government to appropriately consult with the business community and apply an economic impact analysis to inform employment legislation to replace Bill 148. "
ACSESS hopes to continue working with the Ford government to keep Ontario open for business.
