CANADA'S TOP WEATHER REPORTERS AND METEOROLOGISTS GET ON THE OTHER SIDE OF
THE LENS WITH CANON CANADA
David Suzuki Foundation to receive $20,000 on behalf of participants of Canon's online photo exhibit called Climate: The View from Here
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 18 /CNW/ - Canada's weather reporters and meteorologists have seen it all, from record breaking high temperatures in January to hail storms in July. Now 12 high-profile weather reporters have refocused their sights on the environment - through the eye of a camera. Canon Canada gave each participant a Canon PowerShot SX200 IS digital camera and challenged them to capture a series of images inspired by the theme "Climate: The View from Here." All of the photos have been posted on www.canon.ca/weatherphotos for Canadians to see and vote for their favourite. Canon will be donating $20,000 to the David Suzuki Foundation on behalf of all of the participants and in addition, will donate $5,000 to the charity of choice of the weather reporter or meteorologist whose photograph earns the most votes online.
"Rich in natural resources and diverse in climate and landscape, Canada's environment deserves to be both protected and celebrated," said Colleen Ryan, Senior Director, Corporate Communications, Canon Canada Inc. "Our corporate philosophy of Kyosei, which means living and working together for the common good, directs everything we do at Canon. This initiative is designed to support environmental groups in their efforts to preserve our environment and initiate change as well as inspire regular Canadians to examine the environment in their local city and beyond in new ways. "
The Other Side of the Lens initiative features images of ferocious rain storms, spectacular coastlines, unforgettable views, local habitat and much more. Canadians are encouraged to check out the images and vote for their favourite photos. Voting begins today and will be open until 12:00 a.m. on November 18, 2010. The winner will be announced on November 22, 2010.
"Canon's Other Side of the Lens is a fantastic opportunity to peer closely at the world around us and capture moments that we might otherwise only half recognize as time elapses," said the Weather Network's Chris St. Clair. "The challenge was to search out the new frontiers in our evolution to a greener society. I took hundreds of pictures of power plants, transmission lines, smoke stacks, crowded expressways, wind farms, solar arrays, farmers' fields and more. I felt a tranquil union between wind farms, the future of clean energy production, and traditional agriculture. Feeding and powering from the same piece of land - imagine that reality!"
"Participating in the Other Side of the Lens program was an experience that really opened up a new world for me as it involved learning, exploring and capturing images of something I'm passionate about - our natural environment!" said Sylvia Kuzyk from CTV Winnipeg.
This is Canon's sixth annual Other Side of The Lens program. Previous years have been done in partnership with Earth Day Canada, Right to Play and Food Banks Canada.
