OTTAWA, May 14, 2014 /CNW/ - The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada will receive the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service today in recognition of the long history of medical and surgical specialists who have served, and currently serve, in the Canadian Armed Forces.
At a ceremony held in Ottawa this morning, General Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff, will present the award to Royal College President Cecil Rorabeck, OC, MD, FRCSC, and CEO Andrew Padmos, MD, FRCPC.
"This is a true honor," says Dr. Padmos. "We are deeply proud of our Fellows who've sacrificed their time, energy and personal safety to deliver care in times of war and peace."
The Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service recognizes outstanding service performed by persons or organizations outside the active military community. It is awarded for service "of a rare and exceptionally high standard, which accrues great benefit to the CF as a whole."
Since its founding, Royal College physicians and surgeons have delivered, and continue to deliver, high-quality medical care to military personnel and civilians worldwide. These Fellows practise in both surgical and medical specialties, and include both civilians and Canadian Armed Forces specialist medical officers.
Most recently Royal College Fellows have served in Afghanistan, where they not only provided medical and surgical care but also helped develop training materials and curricula for local medical and surgical training programs.
"Fellows serving in the Canadian Armed Forces deliver care in the most difficult conditions to patients in truly dire need," said Dr. Rorabeck. "The Royal College has a long legacy of Fellows serving with the military, and we are extremely proud of that relationship."
In addition to the presentation of the medallion, sister plaques will be unveiled, signifying partnership between the Royal College and the Canadian Armed Forces which will be permanently located at the headquarters of each organization.
