Canadian-born commentator, David Frum, pens satire on Washington's political culture; The Huffington Post Has Exclusive
TORONTO, April 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Canadian political commentator David Frum (Daily Beast/Newsweek and CNN) will release Patriots, his political satire and first novel, on April 30, 2012. The Huffington Post, including The Huffington Post Canada and The Huffington Post UK, has obtained exclusive serialization rights and will post the first chapters of Patriots over the week beginning April 23. This will mark the first time The Huffington Post has serialized a novel.
Patriots opens as America's first black president has just lost re-election. A new leader tries to pull the country out of a terrible recession -- only to face a devilish plot from inside his own party. This darkly comic satire is not only a warning about the future of American politics, it is an insider's explanation of why the U.S. political system has so badly failed the American people.
Frum explains his choice of fiction: "In journalism I can only tell what happened. In fiction, I can show it. Journalism can go right up to the door of the room in which the decisions are made. A novel can go inside the room - and inside the character's heads. A novel makes it possible to understand not just events, but the people who control the events; not only their choices, but also their motives."
Patriots tells the story of Walter Schotzke, the aimless young heir to America's largest mustard fortune. Sent to a job in Washington after failing at everything else, Walter quickly proves to be a better student of the dark side of politics than he ever was at all the boarding schools he was thrown out of -- until young Walter inadvertently finds himself the unlikely hero of the angriest populist movement America has ever seen.
"We're delighted to partner with David Frum in serializing his hilarious new novel," says Arianna Huffington, President and Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post Media Group. "David has been a friend - and HuffPost blogger - for years. He is someone who fearlessly speaks his mind, regardless of where the chips may fall, so it's no surprise he's able to convey so much truth in his fiction. We know our readers will eagerly anticipate engaging with each new chapter as it's revealed on our site."
Patriots will be released on April 30, 2012 in e-book format distributed by 212 Books, a division of leading global talent agency WME, and available from Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and other digital retailers. David Frum will be available at that time for interviews. Frum, a former speechwriter to President George W. Bush, is the author of six previous books, two of them New York Times best-sellers.
