Canadian Business Crowns Prodigy Game as Country's Fastest-Growing Software Company
TORONTO, Oct. 4, 2018 /CNW/ - Prodigy Game, an award-winning educational technology company, is Canada's fastest-growing software company in 2018, according to the Canadian Business Growth 500 rankings.
Despite its remarkable five-year growth rate of 9,230 per cent, the company's beginnings are humble. It started as an undergraduate project for founders Alex Peters and Rohan Mahimker at the University of Waterloo. They created an online video game for students to practice Grade 1 to 8 math skills, with the mission of helping every child in the world love learning.
"Learning math through worksheets was a tedious process," says Mahimker, reflecting back to his childhood. "At the same time, we enjoyed playing video games like Pokemon, so we asked ourselves if we could blend these two experiences."
Prodigy Game heavily relied on user feedback to build a game that is both engaging and educational. It was this feedback that allowed the team to build several of the core in-game features, and come up with the company's novel freemium business model.
Prodigy Game credits its growth rate to its user-obsessed culture and high internal talent bar. "We are a very mission-driven company, and identifying with this mission has been a big attractor for the amazing talent on our team," says Mahimker.
With 180 employees and growing rapidly, the company has recently opened a Toronto office to access the vibrant Toronto tech community and complement its Burlington, Ont. headquarters. Prodigy Game forecasts adding another 200 employees between both offices over the next 12 months.
These employees will help further the company's long-term vision of providing equal access to education across the world. With a user base of more than 40 million students across Canada and the United States, this vision is within reach.
"We believe that education should be a basic human right," says co-founder Alex Peters. "My motivation is a combination of knowing that we must level the playing field in education so that children can choose their own destiny, and knowing we're in a unique position to execute on that."
