Canadian Cancer Society member receives Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal

TORONTO, May 30, 2012 /CNW/ - A leading fundraiser at the Canadian Cancer Society's Ontario division has been honoured by the prestigious Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her inspirational role in stimulating philanthropy and engaging donors in Canada.

Susan Horvath, Vice-President, Leadership Philanthropy, has been instrumental in creating meaningful opportunities for major donors that will have a significant impact in the fight against cancer.

"The Canadian Cancer Society has more impact, against more cancers, in more communities, than any other cancer charity in Canada and fundraising is crucial to that success," says Martin Kabat, Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. "Susan's work is critical in helping us ensure that we meet the growing needs of Canadians fighting cancer by funding work that will prevent cancer, save lives and help people living with the disease."

Horvath has 22 years of extensive fundraising experience working with leading foundations and not-for-profits. She came to the Society from her role as president of the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation.

Horvath has also held leadership roles at Robarts Research Institute, the University of Western Ontario, the United Way of London & Middlesex and volunteer roles in other not-for-profit organizations. She is a Certified Fund Raising Executive and currently serves as the President of the Association for Fundraising Professionals, Greater Toronto Chapter - the largest chapter for this international organization.

In 1997, Horvath received the SIRIUS Award for Fund Raising Excellence from the London & Region Fund Raising Executives and, in 2002, she was honoured for her leadership by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.

The Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal is a new commemorative medal created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60^th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada and as a way to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
