Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society applauds Nobel Winner
MONTREAL, Oct 4 /CNW/ - The Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society is absolutely delighted by the news that Professor Bob Edwards' incomparable contribution to reproductive biomedicine has finally been recognized by his receiving the 2010 Nobel Prize for Medicine.
His outstanding achievements, not only in the development of the human in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure, but also his visionary insights into stem cells, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, and many other aspects of reproductive physiology, made Bob Edwards not just a pioneer, but the tenacious innovator who created the framework for so much of what is now taken as commonplace in modern reproductive biomedicine.
Although his early work was often controversial, millions of infertile couples around the world have benefited from IVF treatment, with more than 4 million children having been born to date. In many developed countries, 2 to 3 per cent of all children are now born as a result of IVF treatment -- something that has only been possible because of Edwards' single-minded determination.
While it is terribly sad that this ultimate recognition of Edwards' achievements has come so late, when his failing health will reduce his ability to enjoy the award, it is yet another reason why this great scientist's achievements will be remembered for a long time.
