OTTAWA, June 6, 2017 /CNW/ - The Canadian Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Coalition of automakers will be hosting two hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle test-drive events. The first event is for Mayor Jim Watson, city councillors, and members of the public on Wednesday, June 7, between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the Lisgar Loop on the South side of City Hall.
The second test-drive event is for Cabinet Ministers, MPs, political staff, public servants, and members of the public on Wednesday, June 7, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. directly in front of the entrance to the House of Commons building.
These events present an opportunity to see, touch, drive, and learn about the several models of hydrogen FCEVs that will be present from Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota.
The Ride-n-Drive will coincide with Canada's hosting of the United Nations World Environment Day and Canada's Environment week, in the spirit of raising awareness of the substantial environmental benefits of zero-emission FCEVs powered by hydrogen. As Canada aims to meet the federal government's announced greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels are no longer a sustainable option. The innovative technology in Hydrogen-powered vehicles will play an essential role in reducing emissions, maintaining healthy air quality, and reducing greenhouse gas emission rates.
Attendees of the two events will include Mayor Jim Watson, Ottawa city councillors, prominent cabinet ministers, senators, political staff, elected officials, and government decision makers.
Among cabinet ministers will be the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; and the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Small Business and Tourism.
Minister Navdeep Bains commented on the 2017 federal budget and investing in clean technology in Canada earlier this year in April stating, "Our 2017 budget proposes a number of approaches [to] improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, create a cleaner environment and healthier communities. Our government will also continue to help companies raise the standard in the field of clean technology in order to improve the quality of life for all Canadians."
The coalition is working with government to ensure hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles play the integral role they will need to in order for Canada to be successful in its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
About FCEVs
Hydrogen FCEVs are next-generation electric vehicles that produce their own power through an electrochemical process combining stored Hydrogen and atmospheric Oxygen atoms in a fuel cell stack. There is no combustion involved and the only exhaust emission is pure water vapour rendering FCEVs as zero emission vehicles .
About the Coalition
The Canadian Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Coalition of automakers is dedicated to raising awareness of the advanced engineering, safety, environmental benefits, and transformative potential of FCEVs. In addition, the coalition aims to foster new FCEV consumer and fleet markets in Canada through the support and creation of new and publically accessible FCEV fuelling infrastructure in Canada.
