OTTAWA, ON, June 3, 2014 /CNW/ - Yesterday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced the formation of a unity government with Hamas. In response, Shimon Koffler Fogel, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, issued the following statement:
"Nothing would be more amenable to Israel and its supporters in their search for peace than a Palestinian national unity government based on Hamas' acceptance of the Quartet's conditions: recognition of Israel's right to exist, renunciation of terror, and commitment to abide by previous Israel-PLO agreements.
"Unfortunately, Hamas continues to reject the international community's modest and necessary conditions for its inclusion as a legitimate party. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' decision to unite with Hamas absent its acceptance of the Quartet conditions is irreconcilable with the genuine pursuit of peace."
