RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Sept. 13, 2016 /CNW/ - Para-swimmer Aurélie Rivard appears on track for a third medal at the Paralympics as she clocked a Games record time in the women's S10 100-m freestyle heats to rank first for tonight's final.

Rivard, a gold medallist in world record time in the 50-m free and silver medallist in the 200-m IM so far in Rio, clocked 59.89 seconds to be one of four Canadians with second swims tonight.

"My goal was to finish the race and qualify first," said the 20-year-old, who set the world record of 59.17 at last summer's Parapan American Games in Toronto. "It's a pretty amazing time. I didn't give my all. I know I have a lot left for tonight."

Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ont., and Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C. ranked second and fifth in the women's S7 200-m IM heats and Nathan Stein of Surrey, B.C., heads to the men's S10 100-m free final with the sixth fastest time.

In the women's wheelchair basketball quarterfinal, Canada lost 78-60 to the Netherlands. Cindy Ouellet of Quebec City was Canada's top scorer with 20 points and Janet McLachlan of Vancouver added 18.

Table tennis player Stephanie Chan of Richmond, B.C., lost the bronze medal match in the women's class 7 to Seong-Ok Kim of South Korea 12-14, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8. Chan was the first Canadian to play for a medal at the modern Paralympic Games in table tennis.

In athletics, Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., reached a second final at the Games ranking sixth in men's T34 800-m heats. The final is at 5:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

Men's S10 100 freestyle: Nathan Stein, Surrey, B.C., was sixth in heats and advances to final at 6:11 p.m. Alec Elliott, Kitchener, Ont., and Isaac Bouckley of Port Hope, Ont., were 11^th and 13^th in heats and did not advance.

Women's S10 100-m freestyle: Aurélie Rivard, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., was first in heats and advances to final at 6 :17 p.m. Samantha Ryan, Saskatoon, was 17^th in heats and did not advance.

Women's S8 100-m backstroke: Abi Tripp, Kingston, Ont., Danielle Dorris, Moncton, N.B., Sabrina Duchesne, Quebec City, were 10^th, 15^th, 17^th in heats and did not advance.
