Canadian Multiculturalism Day celebrated at Scarborough Museum

TORONTO, June 27, 2014 /CNW/ - Scarborough Museum and its cultural partners celebrated Canadian Multiculturalism Day this evening with performances, food, history and art that reflect the diverse communities in Scarborough and across the rest of Toronto as well.  

"Toronto is known and admired as one of the most diverse cities in the world," said Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly. "Tonight's event showcased the incredible and diverse talents of Toronto's many communities that make our city one of the best places to live, work and raise a family."

Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic Development Committee, represented the City of Toronto at this event. He was joined by members of the Scarborough Museum Youth Collective, who helped plan and create the event, as well as the Scarborough Historical Society and museum staff and volunteers.

Attendees at tonight's event enjoyed spoken-word performances from members of R.I.S.E. (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere) and Brazilian-style acrobatics and martial arts from Sinha Bahia de Capoeira Canada. Youth-led Bollywood dancing was showcased, as was a visual art exhibit by a group of young Scarborough artists called Residue.

"This evening highlights the amazing work done by the many young people involved in its planning and performances," said Councillor Thompson. "It is inspiring to see them publically project their talents and perspective so successfully."

"This event also shows the innovative ways that Scarborough Museum is working with the youth in our community," said Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker (Ward 38 Scarborough Centre).

The evening was funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage's Celebrate Canada program. Scarborough Museum is one of 11 museums operated by the City of Toronto.
