Canadian Nuclear Association Applauds Strong Support for Nuclear in Ontario
OTTAWA, Nov. 23 /CNW/ - The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) welcomes today's commitment by the Government of Ontario to clean, reliable nuclear power remaining at approximately 50 percent of the provinces electricity supply as a key part of the province's Long-Term Energy Plan.
"Nuclear technology is an integral part of Canada's economy -- from mining to manufacturing to health care. Today's announcement by the Government of Ontario charts the course forward for the 71,000 Canadians who work to bring the benefits of nuclear technology into our daily lives," said Denise Carpenter, President and CEO of the CNA.
"We applaud the Province's commitment to refurbished and new nuclear power plants. This reaffirms the fact that each type of generation has a role to play and that nuclear power is a reliable, safe, and viable part of Ontario's energy system portfolio."
In 2009, over 55 percent of Ontario's electricity was generated by nuclear technology. The nuclear industry employs 71,000 people today across Canada and contributes about $6.6 billion a year to the Gross Domestic Product.
Added Ms. Carpenter, "as a result of today's announcement, nuclear energy will continue to be an important contributor to Canada's energy system in providing clean, safe and reliable power for Ontario families."
