Canadian Students Take Prom Online in Support of Kids Help Phone
National, live-streamed prom event set for May 22nd
TORONTO, May 7, 2020 /CNW/ - Canadian high school grads are coming together and refusing to let COVID-19 take away one of the biggest nights of their lives, making sure that prom is on for 2020 - online that is.
The live-streamed #PromIsOn2020 event is being planned by a national prom committee made up of 36 student leaders representing every province and territory in the country. During the event, grads will show off their prom wear, meet students from across the country and dance to a live DJ set by Juno-winning artist, Loud Luxury, with other special guests set to be announced soon.
To make sure the night also has a lasting impact for Canada's youth, the student committee is working with Student Life Network, Canada's largest online network of students, to raise money and mental health awareness for Kids Help Phone, the only 24/7 e-mental health service offering free, confidential support in English and French to young Canadians.
''During these times of uncertainty, having something to look forward to and being able to share it with people from all around the country is important. It will make us feel like we are stronger than the virus. No matter what, we can still have a great time."
–National prom committee member Maude Levesque
For every student that Tik Toks, promposals on Instagram or joins #PromIsOn2020 live on May 22nd, a donation will be made to Kids Help Phone.
"We hear daily from young people about the things they are worried about. Schools are closed, they aren't able to see their friends or family and now, proms are cancelled. We are so excited to be a part of this initiative and want to thank Canada's young people for being courageous and positive during these unprecedented times."
–CEO of Kids Help Phone Katherine Hay
