Canadian talent continues to shine abroad: Exceptional line-up at the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 10 films in selection Français
MONTREAL, June 18, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce that it will be an exceptional year for Canadian cinema at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, held annually in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic (June 29 to July 7). Ten Canadian films will be screening, including three world premieres from Quebec's emerging talent. In addition, Quebec actor François Papineau (Route 132, Une Vie qui commence) will sit on the Festival's Grand International Jury, which presents the awards prizes in the Official Competition. Established in 1946, the Karlovy Vary film festival is one of the oldest in the world.
"In a year that started with a Silver Bear win for Rebelle at Berlin, followed by two Foreign Language Film Oscar finalist nominations (Monsieur Lazhar and In Darkness), then one of the strongest Canadian contingents at Cannes in recent memory, and now a phenomenal participation at Karlovy Vary, 2012 is proving to be an extraordinary year for Canada on the international scene," said Carolle Brabant, Telefilm's Executive Director. "We are also delighted that François Papineau, a talented Canadian actor whose work deserves international recognition, has accepted to be a member of the Grand Jury this year."
Ivana Novotna, Senior Programmer, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, added: "Over the years, Karlovy Vary has built a solid collaboration with Telefilm Canada in scouting Canadian talent. I am proud that that this year's strong showing includes films by the country's world renowned filmmakers Guy Maddin and David Cronenberg alongside three remarkable films by promising young directors that will be presented as world premieres: Rafaël Ouellet is returning to Karlovy Vary with Camion in Official Competition, Martin Laroche's Les manèges humains will be screened in the competitive Forum of Independents (last year's winner Sunflower Hour by Aaron Houston became a festival fave) and Martin Villeneuve's futuristic sci-fi Mars et Avril."
