LAVAL, QC, Nov. 14, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Teamsters Union has raised $51,000 to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Joint Councils 36, 52, 90 and 91, the Rail Conferences and Teamsters Canada all participated in the effort.
"We were all shocked by this natural catastrophe," explained Teamsters Canada president Robert Bouvier. "It has exacted a terrible toll on the population and we felt we had to do something to help."
In the wake of superstorm Sandy, New York City has set up 14 shelters, currently housing 4,880 people, 12 food and blanket distribution centres, and over 200 sites where citizens can escape the cold. According to the media, hundreds of thousands of meals were distributed, along with 100,000 litres of water and 22,000 blankets.
The money raised by the Canadian Teamsters will be handed over to the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund set up by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which will see that the funds are distributed to the appropriate organizations.
The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
