Canadian Tulip Festival Crowds at Closing Fireworks Highlight Festival's Community Engagement
OTTAWA, May 25, 2018 /CNW/ - The Canadian Tulip Festival topped its 10-day run in the Nation's Capital with a spectacular fireworks display over Dow's Lake that was witnessed by tens of thousands of spectators lining the entire lake's periphery on a perfect spring evening. The night's spectacle was a fitting close to what has been a Festival that is rebuilding itself on collaboration and partnerships without which it could not thrive.
The Festival Board of Directors, management and staff are sincerely grateful to the Province of Ontario, Heritage Canada, the National Capital Commission, Ottawa Tourism and the City of Ottawa for extending their support in making this event a standout as the first significant Festival in the Capital's spring/summer season.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to say a special thank you to our media partners, sponsors, suppliers, artists, entertainers, our dedicated volunteers and our tulip staff for making this year's Festival such a success. Sixty-six years of Festival history represent an authentic and traditional foundation as well as a springboard to a renewed vision of what the Festival can be in this community," said Henry Storgaard, Chair of the Festival.
Notwithstanding the fact that over 40 embassies participated and that over 100 countries were represented; that the artwork of close to 5,000 school children was displayed; that new programming partnerships with Ottawa Markets, Music and Beyond, The Great India Festival, Ottawa Ballet Society, Dance with Us were featured as well as the participation of Bank of Canada Museum, National Gallery, Beechwood Cemetery among others, Festival organizers are looking to strengthen community engagement even more.
In the coming months, the Festival will be soliciting community members for ideas on what they feel the Canadian Tulip Festival needs and would better off doing in the future. Although the Festival has been establishing world friendships for close to 20 years and will continue to do so - in fact, 2019 will bring the 20th Anniversary of the Ottawa-Beijing Sister Cities Agreement with a theme of "China-Canada Tulip Friendship", organizers also acknowledge and cherish the support the Ottawa community brings to the true success of this Festival. Indeed, collaboration both internationally and locally is an integral part of the Canadian Tulip Festival's vision.
About the Canadian Tulip Festival
Since 1953, Canada's most colourful festival celebrates the tulip, Ottawa's official flower and an international symbol of friendship and peace, through art and culture. Paying tribute to veterans and the WWII liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian troops, our millions of tulips set the stage for a celebration of authentic art, cultural, historic, culinary, garden and family tulip experiences. Uniquely Canadian and one of the largest events of its kind in the world!
