Pillow Talk survey uncovers the hidden side of Canadians
TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Although Canadians are known around the world for their good manners and exceptional behavior, a recent national survey, "Pillow Talk" commissioned by Choice Hotels Canada, found the majority of Canuck travellers leave their reservations at the door when checking-in.
In the survey, conducted by Leger Canada, most Canadians say they are more likely to talk to new people (82%), cheat on their diet (70%) and keep their shoes on indoors (52%) while on vacation. Nearly half (45%) of Canadians surveyed say they are more adventurous in the bedroom and almost 1 in 5 (19%) say they would accept a drink from a stranger while on vacation.
Interestingly, only 11% of Canadians admitted to watching pornography, while 8% said they cheated on their spouse or partner. Not surprisingly, 86% said they spend more money while on vacation.
Canadians surveyed, who have taken an average of two leisure trips per year, like to feel pampered while on vacation, with half saying they request fresh towels every day (49%), a third say they order room service (33%), and a quarter say they request new sheets daily (26%). The results show that Canadians in general are not as energy-conscious as they may be at home, increasing their carbon footprint considerably while on holidays. A surprising 23% of those surveyed said they leave the lights on in their hotel room when they are not there.
"Human behaviour is a fascinating thing to analyze and there are many differences in how we behave when at home, compared to when we are in a new environment such as a hotel," says Professor Laura Cavanagh, Behavioural Sciences Program at Seneca College. "We are a product of our environment so it's only natural that our behaviour will be impacted -sometimes for better and sometimes for worse - when we're taken out of our daily routine. Understanding this behaviour and what triggers it can be invaluable knowledge for businesses, like hotels, which focus on guest service."
"We always want to better understand Canadian travellers," said Tim Oldfield, managing director, Choice Hotels Canada. "By reaching out to Canadians across the country, and not just our own customers, we are able to anticipate their wants and needs so we can better tailor the offerings at our properties."
The 2013 "Pillow Talk" survey is an annual survey of Canadian travellers commissioned by Choice Hotels Canada. The survey was completed by 1,000 adult Canadians who have taken at least one leisure trip in the past year and was conducted between June 11 and June 17, 2013 using Leger Marketing's online panel.
