OTTAWA, Sept. 29, 2017 /CNW/ - The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General invites Canadians from across the country to witness the installation of Canada's 29th governor general and commander-in-chief of Canada, Ms. Julie Payette, on Monday, October 2, 2017.
This momentous day will start with the installation ceremony inside the Senate Chamber on Parliament Hill. The ceremony will be followed by the laying of flowers at the National War Memorial, Ms. Payette's official arrival at Rideau Hall, and an evening reception at the Canadian Museum of History.
Canadians will be able to watch the installation ceremony live on Facebook and on major television networks. To follow the developments of the day, we invite them to search for and use the hashtag #GG29.
Below are the details of Ms. Payette's installation day:
10:55 a.m.
Installation Ceremony of Canada's 29th Governor General
Upon arrival on Parliament Hill, Ms. Payette, accompanied by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, will be greeted by the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, the Honourable George J. Furey, Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Indigenous Elders. Ms. Payette and the dignitaries will be led by the Usher of the Black Rod, Mr. Greg Peters, through the Hall of Honour and into the Senate Chamber.
In the Senate Chamber, Ms. Payette will read the oaths of Allegiance, of the Office of Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and of the Keeper of the Great Seal of Canada, as well as sign the Oath Register. Afterwards, a 21-gun salute will be fired.
Ms. Payette will then be presented with four collars, those of the Chancellor of the Order of Canada, the Chancellor of Order of Military Merit, the Chancellor of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, and the head of the Canadian Heraldic Authority. The Prime Minister will then speak on this occasion, and Ms. Payette will deliver her installation speech. Artistic and cultural performances will take place throughout the ceremony.

Military Honours on Parliament Hill
After the installation ceremony, Ms. Payette will step outside to receive military honours, including a Royal Salute and a 21-gun salute. She will inspect the guard of honour for the first time as commander-in-chief of Canada.

Laying of Flowers at the National War Memorial
Ms. Payette will walk from Parliament Hill to the National War Memorial where she will lay flowers to honour and remember Canadians who lost their lives fighting on behalf of their country.
