GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 22, 2014 /CNW/ - Amidst increased interest regarding issues related to access to information, open government and institutional transparency, Canadians are set to mark this year's Right to Know celebrations. A series of events and activities from across the country will be held from Sept. 22-28, leading up to International Right to Know Day on September 28.
Right to Know Week is meant to raise awareness about the right of all citizens to access information held by public bodies. It also showcases the benefits of transparent and accessible government.
"As we celebrate Right to Know, I want to stress how important this right is. Canadians should not take it for granted," stated Suzanne Legault, Information Commissioner of Canada. "It is the role and the responsibility of all of us to champion the cause of transparency and to nurture a culture of openness in Canada."
Right to Know Day originated in Sofia, Bulgaria, at an international meeting of access-to-information advocates on September 28, 2002. They proposed that a day be dedicated to the promotion of freedom of information worldwide.
