CALGARY, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) announces the 2010 Geothermal Power Forum and Reception, December 2^nd, 2010 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Calgary is known as Canada's "Energy Capital". While historically focused away from alternative energy, a changing landscape is bringing new attention to renewables in Western Canada, including geothermal power. Geothermal power has been referred to as the "King of Renewables" with consistent base-load power production, low emissions and a small environmental footprint. Under carbon emission legislation, geothermal energy offers a CO₂ free, clean source of power.  With an estimated potential of over 5,000 MW, geothermal power's significance in Canada's energy portfolio will continue to grow. What is not commonly known is the opportunity for the oil & gas industry to use geothermal energy in co-produced oil & gas well applications, enhanced geothermal systems in the Oil Sands, and direct use of heat for petroleum facilities, also substantial. Geothermal energy in Canada represents an investment potential exceeding $20 billion, will create over 10,000 jobs and can offset more than 25,000 tonnes of CO² per year. 

Attendees at the Forum will hear about high profile geothermal power projects, learn about the geothermal drilling industry, and understand the geothermal impact from the finance industry, utilities and other off-takers. The Forum will also provide an overview of the impact of the Canadian Geothermal Code for Public Reporting, which strives to improve investor confidence in the geothermal energy industry through the establishment of metrics for geothermal value, similar to oil & gas. The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Michal Moore, co-author of the M.I.T. report "The Future of Geothermal Energy". Dr. Moore will explore the potential for geothermal energy in Canada's most significant energy development, the Alberta Oil Sands.

In addition to savvy resource investors and an established energy finance community, Alberta offers a highly skilled talent pool of geoscientists and engineers who can contribute to the development of geothermal energy and CanGEA's goal of 5,000 MW by 2015!
