Cannabis Canada Association Welcomes Government of Canada's Proposed Cannabis Act
OTTAWA, April 13, 2017 /CNW/ - Cannabis Canada, the leading organization of companies that hold Health Canada licenses to cultivate and sell medical cannabis, welcomes the legislation tabled today by the Government of Canada to legalize, regulate, and restrict access to cannabis. This as an important step that catapults Canada to a world leadership position in a new and exciting industry sector. The Association looks forward to continuing to working closely with all levels of government throughout the process of legalization.
"Our Association actively participated in the consultation process undertaken by the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation in 2016, which led to the thorough and thoughtful report it submitted to the Government of Canada in December, much of which we see reflected in this legislation," said Colette Rivet, Executive Director of Cannabis Canada Association. "The Association is pleased to note the significant role that Licensed Producers, large and small, will play in the new system. Our membership is unanimous in the need to protect the health and well-being of Canadians. We share the Government's desire to see the black market shut down and ensure that cannabis is kept out of the hands of youth. We are eager to continue working in collaboration and compliance with all levels of government, bringing our expertise to bear to ensure a smooth transition, while safeguarding product quality and safety, and promoting effective education about a new and complex product."
The Association is in complete support of prohibiting advertising and promotion that is directed at children. "We hope to see better recognition of the fact that a certain level of product branding and advertising, that in no way appeals to children or youth, is necessary," clarified Ms Rivet. "Consumers need information about a new and complex product. This will also help to provide clarity in the marketplace about where and how to obtain legal and safe cannabis versus illegal cannabis, and help to more quickly drive out the black market."
