OTTAWA, Nov. 18, 2015 /CNW/ - CARE Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Kenneth Sunquist as its new chair of the board of directors.
Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Sunquist is a former Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia and assistant deputy minister with the (former) Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He brings to CARE Canada more than 35 years of global experience and in-depth knowledge of international development and relations.
"I am very pleased that Ken Sunquist has accepted the position of chair of the CARE Canada board," says Gillian Barth, CARE Canada president and chief executive officer. "His solid background in global affairs is critical in our efforts to address issues and trends such as, rising food insecurity, the concentration of poverty in middle income countries, urbanization, and the growing roles of the private sector, technology and social engagement. I am heartened by his commitment and leadership."
"Given the pervasiveness of poverty, it's clear that the old approach to international development no longer works," says Sunquist. "Isolated, patchwork projects deliver short-term relief at best. Instead, CARE programs carefully integrate gender equality, governance for all, and improved resilience for the most vulnerable people. In this way, families and communities are better able to absorb and adapt to the shock of poverty and social injustice. We all want lasting change and self-sufficiency for people. That's why we focus on building their resilience, offering them security and upholding their dignity."
Sunquist replaces outgoing CARE Canada chair Louise Fréchette, former deputy secretary general of the United Nations. Fréchette will be continuing her work with CARE and will pursue new opportunities with CARE International.
