CareerBuilder Canada and EMSI Reveal Top Industries Hiring for IT Positions
TORONTO, March 27, 2014 /CNW/ - It's no secret that information technology has become one of the hottest sectors for employment in Canada. But where are IT workers actually getting hired, and who exactly is hiring them? CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (EMSI) have put together a list of the industries that are leading IT job creation since 2010.
"As technology continues to reshape how companies across different industries do business, the demand for skilled IT professionals will continue to grow," said Brent Rasmussen, President of CareerBuilder North America. "IT employment has been expanding in the past few years and is expected to continue to grow in a variety of industries throughout Canada."
The industries that have added the most IT workers since 2010 include:
1) Finance and insurance –Establishments primarily engaged in financial transactions (that is, transactions involving the creation, liquidation, or change in ownership of financial assets) or in facilitating financial transactions.

- Percent Change (2010-2013): 16 percent
2) Information and cultural industries – Establishments primarily engaged in producing and distributing (except by wholesale and retail methods) information and cultural products. Establishments providing the means to transmit or distribute these products or providing access to equipment and expertise for processing data are also included.
- Change in Jobs: 7,419
- Percent Change (2010-2013): 12 percent
3) Manufacturing – Establishments primarily engaged in the chemical, mechanical or physical transformation of materials or substances into new products. These products may be finished or semi-finished. Manufacturing establishments are known by a variety of trade designations, such as plants, factories or mills.

- Percent Change (2010-2013): 7 percent
4) Wholesale trade - Establishments primarily engaged in wholesaling merchandise, generally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise.
- Change in Jobs: 2,193
- Percent Change (2010-2013): 6 percent
5) Administrative and support, waste management and remedial services - Establishments of two different types: those primarily engaged in activities that support the day-to-day operations of other organizations; and those primarily engaged in waste management activities.
- Change in Jobs: 1,875
- Percent Change (2010-2013): 5 percent
6) Transportation and warehousing - Establishments primarily engaged in transporting passengers and goods, warehousing and storing goods, and providing services to these establishments.. National post office and courier establishments, which also transport goods, are included in this sector.

- Percent Change (2010-2013): 11 percent
7) Retail Trade - Establishments primarily engaged in retailing merchandise, generally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise.
- Change in Jobs: 1,398
- Percent Change (2010-2013): 6 percent
8) Utilities - Establishments primarily engaged in operating electric, gas and water utilities. These establishments generate, transmit, control and distribute electric power; distribute natural gas; treat and distribute water; operate sewer systems and sewage treatment facilities; and provide related services, generally through a permanent infrastructure of lines, pipes and treatment and processing facilities.

9) Construction –Establishments primarily engaged in constructing, repairing and renovating buildings and engineering works, and in subdividing and developing land. These establishments may operate on their own account or under contract to other establishments or property owners. They may produce complete projects or just parts of projects. Establishments may produce new construction, or undertake repairs and renovations to existing structures.

- Percent Change (2010-2013): 17 percent
10) Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction – Establishments primarily engaged in extracting naturally occurring minerals, and establishments engaged in exploration for minerals, development of mineral properties and mining operations are included in this sector.
- Change in Jobs: 782
- Percent Change (2010-2013): 18 percent
11) Real estate and rental and leasing – Establishments primarily engaged in renting, leasing or otherwise allowing the use of tangible or intangible assets. Establishments primarily engaged in managing real estate for others; selling, renting and/or buying of real estate for others; and appraising real estate, are also included.

- Percent Change (2010-2013): 13 percent
12) Accommodation and food services – Establishments primarily engaged in providing short-term lodging and complementary services, and establishments primarily engaged in preparing meals, snacks and beverages, to customer orders, for immediate consumption on and off the premises.
