OTTAWA, May 8, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada's Building Trades Unions (CBTU) support the motion to reject the Senate's amendments to Bill C-4, tabled by the Honorable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour. Bill C-4 was one of the first items of legislation introduced by the Trudeau government, repealing legislation from the prior session's Bill C-377 and Bill C-525. Bob Blakely, CBTU Chief Operating Officer, noted that, "the unfortunate appending of amendments to Bill C-4 contradicts the spirit of the original legislation, which was designed to restore the balance in labour relations."
The Trudeau government understood that C-377 was punitive legislation which was ideologically driven and not good public policy. The repeal legislation, passed by the House of Commons this past October, was welcomed by CBTU at the time.
Robert Kucheran, Chairman of the Canadian Executive Board of CBTU and General Vice President of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), says "while we of course understand the nature of the process, and the independence of the Senate, we hope that those two houses will be able to reach agreement on a piece of legislation that will do the right thing by our members and all middle class, working families."
The passage of C-4, in its original form, would ensure that CBTU could continue to represent the interests of skilled trades workers across Canada and help grow Canada's economy.
