Celebration of the Life of Coptic Pope - His Holiness Pope Shenouda
MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 23, 2012 /CNW/ - On Sunday, March 25, 2012, the Coptic Churches of Canada will hold a memorial service to celebrate the life of the late pope and patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt on March 17th. The funeral service in Egypt was attended by hundreds of thousands, including many delegations of world and clerical leaders.
Pope Shenouda was a transformative leader who oversaw the spiritual revival and expansion of the Coptic Orthodox Church the world over. In addition, he was a man with a deep sense of patriotism towards the preservation of a united Egypt and a passionate advocate of unity among the Christian churches. For his erudition in theology and scripture, Pope Shenouda was awarded eight honourary Doctoral Degrees from internationally recognized universities in the United States of America and Europe. He toiled endlessly for his flock and for all Egyptians and will forever be remembered as a one of the great fathers of the church and a renowned national figure for all Egyptians.
Coptic Egyptians are the largest Christian community in the Middle East, comprising of 10 - 12 percent of Egypt's population (87 Million).
