Students heading back to school can look forward to new healthy and delicious menu items
TORONTO, Aug. 13, 2014 /CNW/ - Food Network Celebrity Chef Corbin Tomaszeski, in partnership with Chartwells School Dining, launches new signature menu items at 255 schools in 33 boards across Ontario this fall. Created by Chef Corbin, the new signature menu items offer great tasting, authentic flavours, as well as being healthy and nutritious.
And, just to be sure, Chef Corbin and Chartwells put them to the test, first talking to students about the kinds of meals they like to eat and then testing the recipes at three Ontario secondary schools. Students tasted the food and provided their opinions, such as "Spice is good!", "We love Mexican flavours!" and "Pasta Please!" With the feedback, Chef Corbin adjusted his recipes ensuring everything was just right. This process ensured the final recipes met Chartwells' highest standards, incorporated delicious flavours, and reflected the views of students.
"Much to the surprise of teachers and administrators, students who often wouldn't touch a vegetable were eating kale, zucchini and mushrooms and going back for seconds," says Chef Corbin. "If students are excited about the food and we provide meals that they want to eat and don't feel like they have to eat, then they will choose nutritious options."
The Ontario Government's School Food and Beverage policy, launched in 2011, was designed to develop healthier learning environments and improve student achievement as research has shown that children who eat a healthy diet are more ready to learn and more likely to be successful in school. Chartwells' new signature recipes will continue to show students and school boards that school meals can be both healthy and delicious.
"During the school day, eating well is very important as it helps students to concentrate in class and participate in school activities," said Brenda O'Neill, Regional Vice President, Chartwells School Dining. "We're really excited to build on our experience of designing menus that are both tasty and healthy through our partnership with Chef Corbin and look forward to seeing students experience the new meals."
What will the students at these 255 schools find in their cafeteria this fall? Here is a list of Chef Corbin's signature recipes developed exclusively for Chartwells School Dining:
