CEMA Unveils Groundwater Portal

FORT MCMURRAY, AB, Aug. 28, 2012 /CNW/ - The Cumulative Environmental Management Association (CEMA) has unveiled a new groundwater information portal on its website. The web-based information includes a groundwater story board presentation; providing a breakdown of information (what is groundwater, what is an aquifer and groundwater and the oil sands) and a plain language document explaining groundwater ( "Groundwater 101") with a strong oil sands context (mining and in-situ).

"CEMA is very pleased to release this up to date information pertaining to groundwater in the oilsands region. The portal includes highly visual easily accessible content (story boards, video), as well as a more complex written report" added Doug Geller, a Co-Chair of the Groundwater Working Group.

Dustin Shauer, another of the co-chairs, "By working through the CEMA multi-stakeholder process our Groundwater Working Group has compiled credible, technically accurate information about groundwater and its uses in northeastern Alberta. The portal is intended to be a source of information that also serves to stimulate broadened interest and discussion on groundwater and related water management issues in the oil sands region

The Groundwater Working Group was established by CEMA in June 2011 to address management of cumulative effects of industrial development on the functioning of groundwater systems in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).  The GWWG addresses groundwater - related issues and develop strategies or management plans.

A multi-stakeholder, non-profit society CEMA is a key advisor to the provincial and federal governments and is committed to respectful, inclusive dialogue to make recommendations to manage the cumulative environmental effects of regional development on air, land, water and biodiversity.
