Centennial College creates 23 online diploma programs for domestic and international learners
TORONTO, May 7, 2020 /CNW/ - Centennial College is offering 23 career-oriented programs with a first-semester course lineup that will be delivered wholly online this spring.
At a time when many colleges and universities are cancelling their spring and summer offerings, Centennial College is moving ahead with innovative programming to respond to its domestic and international learner markets. Nine of the full-time programs, which range from international business management to baking skills, will be delivered online in their entirety.
"This online learning opportunity reaches a number of demographics, from recent high school graduates to international students," says Virginia Macchiavello, Associate Vice President, International Education at Centennial. "We wanted a global solution that looked ahead at recovery knowing that we won't go back to our old normal. With the world shifting online for education, it will be the new normal."
Centennial moved quickly to determine which programs would be most suitable for an online environment, consulted with industry experts and faculty about program design, and rolled out the online curriculum with the help of OntarioLearn, a consortium of public colleges and digital learning specialists. Summer semester online classes begin on May 25.
The summer semester catalogue of programs draws from Centennial's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and The Business School. There's a high degree of flexibility: students can log in anytime to participate in simulated labs, complete case studies, watch instructional videos, interact in online forums and more, depending on the program.
"The learning experience that can be created with today's technology is amazing. It will also give students digital skills for the new reality," says Macchiavello. "In addition, an online classroom experience presents opportunities to share ideas with classmates who may be anywhere in the world, so you gain a globalized perspective that enriches learning."
Centennial's full-time online summer semester will be a 360-degree experience, with access to resources such as tutors, career counsellors, online learning strategists and instructors. Once local physical distancing restrictions are lifted and in-person classes resume, online students will have the opportunity to transition to in-class delivery or a blended model of instruction.
