MONTREAL, April 10, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Yesterday evening Centraide awarded 14 Solidaires to honour the efforts of companies, community agencies and volunteers who, through their involvement, alleviate the effects of poverty and exclusion in Greater Montreal and improve the lives of the most vulnerable. These awards were presented at Distinctions, a recognition event held at the Montreal Science Centre in the presence of some 300 guests.
Five Solidaires were presented this year to recognize the excellence of the community work of agencies, their employees and their volunteers. The award recipients were Parrainage civique les Marronniers for its café-bistro le Jarry Deuxième; Action-Gardien, a neighbourhood round table in Pointe-Saint-Charles; Christine Fortin, Executive Director of Carrefour Familial Hochelaga; Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier, a volunteer at the agency À deux mains/Head & Hands, and Daphné Mailloux-Rousseau, Executive Director of L'Ancre des Jeunes.
Nine Solidaires were also awarded to honour companies, organizations and unions for their outstanding participation in Centraide's annual campaign. The top prize for best campaign, the Solidaires Overall Support, went to CAE. Solidaires were also presented to METRO, Industrial Alliance, Insurance and Financial Services, Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust, MNP, Polytechnique Montréal, BMO Financial Group, Rio Tinto Alcan and the union IAMAW, locals 869 and 2468, at Rolls-Royce Canada.
In addition to the Solidaires, special jury Coup de cœur awards were presented to Rio Tinto Alcan, Xerox Canada, HEC and CGI.
Finally, the Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire Award was presented to Claude Séguin, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Development and Strategic Investments, CGI, in recognition of his remarkable volunteer involvement at Centraide over the past some 15 years.
Centraide of Greater Montreal is an independent organization managed by a board of directors that is representative of the community. It serves the Island of Montreal, Laval and communities on the South Shore, supporting some 370 community agencies and projects that help half a million vulnerable people. About 57,000 volunteers are involved in the agencies supported by Centraide, and another 23,000 work on its annual campaign. About 130,000 donors contribute to the campaign, which is supported by some 1,700 private, public and parapublic companies and organizations, as well as large trade unions.
