Certified General Accountants Association of B.C. Announces the Recipients of
Academic Scholarships and Awards

VANCOUVER, Nov. 27 /CNW/ - The Certified General Accountants Association of British Columbia (CGA-BC) is pleased to congratulate the students in the CGA Program of Professional Studies who have received educational awards and academic scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year.
- Ryan Castaneda of Burnaby has been awarded the Barbeau Silver Medal from the firm of Barbeau, Sutherland, Falk, Barristers and Solicitors for the highest examination mark in two taxation courses: the Level Four course Personal & Corporate Taxation and the PACE Level course Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation. Ryan has also been awarded a CCH Canadian Limited Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the PACE Level course Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation and a CGA-Canada Award of Excellence for his academic achievements in the Program's Level Four courses.
- Yu Bin Chao of Vancouver has been awarded a CCH Canadian Limited Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the Level Four course Personal & Corporate Taxation.
- Zhi Fu of Richmond has been awarded the TelPay Incorporated Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the PACE Level course Advanced Corporate Finance.
- Siew Fung Gaunt of Victoria has been awarded the Dave Elder Memorial Prize in Accounting for the highest average standing in the Financial Accounting courses offered in Levels One, Two and Three.
- John Hoekstra, CGA, of Abbotsford has been awarded the CGA-BC Educational Foundation's W. Curry McCalpin Gold Medal for the highest average grade on all courses in the CGA program.
- Wendy G. Howell of Kelowna has been awarded a CCH Canadian Limited Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the Level Four course External Auditing.
- Bryan H. Layfield of Burnaby has been awarded the David B. Reid Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the PACE Level course Advanced External Auditing.
- Florence K. Liu of Richmond has been awarded the Robert Half International Award for the highest examination mark in the Level Four course Financial Accounting: Consolidations & Advanced Issues.
- Colin R. McCully of Vancouver has been awarded the ACCPAC International Scholarship for the highest mark in the Level Two course Financial Accounting: Assets and he has also received the JAZZ-it! Scholarship for the highest mark in the Level Three course Financial Accounting: Liabilities & Equities.
- Tanya P. Menghrajani of Surrey has been awarded the Intuit Canada Scholarship for the highest course mark in the Level Three course Managing Information Systems.
- Tobey Mei Yu Ngai of Vancouver has been awarded the OnPayroll.ca Corporate Scholarship for the highest examination mark in the PACE Level course Information Systems Strategy.
- Virginia Sou of Richmond has been awarded the ENCON Group Inc. Insurance Public Practice Award for the best aggregate total marks (for all CGA regions) for the three examinations offered in the public practice stream—Financial Accounting: Consolidations & Advanced Issues; Advanced External Auditing; and Advanced Personal & Corporate Taxation.
The CGA-BC Educational Foundation also awards merit scholarships to students who have achieved the highest average grade in selected courses for each of the program's four levels of core courses. This year's recipients are:
- Level One: Jason Toth of Vancouver
- Level Two: Melanie Grisse of North Vancouver
- Level Three: Lorraine Coughlin of Gibsons
- Level Four: Ryan Castaneda of Burnaby
As the province's largest professional accounting association, CGA-BC represents more than 14,000 CGAs and students. Members work in industry, commerce, government and in public practice. The Association promotes the excellence of its members and advances the accounting profession through education, certification and the protection of the public interest.
CGA-BC leads the profession in the integration of ethics into its academic program, and has now introduced a rules and standards course for all new graduates of the CGA program to complement an ongoing ethics requirement for members.
The Association also offers a wide range of employment services and programs to its members, students and the business community. These services include CGAjobs.org, a job postings website for finance and accounting professionals, and the Partners in Employment Program (PEP), which recognizes organizations that provide an effective working and training environment for CGAs and CGA students.
